Daniel Parkins points out that there are many things in life that we desire with a passion that can hardly be contained. Wealth, fame, power, pleasure- these are just a few things that most Christians in the Church today run to, rather than seek to avoid. We adore with all our hearts modern technologies like iPads, computers, or the newest cars and gadgets. We fear man and cherish the opinion of others and hide them in our hearts as if they had the power to heal or hurt us to our very core. Most love to be in control of their lives and influencing things in this world so they turn out the way we plan. We are a Church that is bent on looking so similar to the world that we cannot be told apart from them. Materialism doesn’t define the world more than it defines the Church, and we are drinking in the cultural influences around us like we were parched in a desert. Though each of these things can be turned around for the glory of God if found in their correct place, most of us find these as our source of joy in life rather than the love of the Father through Jesus Christ His Son.Earthly mindedness, particularly among those who know God through Jesus Christ, has been around since the fall where Adam and Eve cherished a piece of fruit more than the One who gave them life. Though there have been several books written on the subject of being earthly minded as opposed to being heavenly minded, I wanted to write a small booklet for others to pick up, read in a short while, and be reminded quickly on the vast importance of being heavenly minded. In Your Element seeks to be a source of encouragement to believers in Christ to stop loving the world, put an end to our rampant earthly-mindedness, and begin having the bulk of our conversations in heaven.
